Sometimes my very favorite pictures from kids birthdays (or any photo sessions) are not always the smiley ones – I like the mix of introspective, intense feelings that young kids don’t yet edit away – the intense anticipation of the cake, the cake, the excitement of seeing friends, all of the little guys busy, busy, busy. The freedom of play. Childhood.

LOTS of movement – lots of fun! They were sooo cute. I followed them playing and I got great shots. And then we tried for some posed photos, but really if you are having fun playing, why stop the fun? The planned family portrait was in danger of disaster until – their dad swung Patrick upside down. Solved! For moving little busy bodies, trying something different to get the giggles going is a great strategy for those challenging posed portraits.

I spent much of the afternoon crawling on the ground, chasing her and giggling. When I take photos of little ones I try to get low, low, low on the ground as much as possible, and to laugh a lot. Try it when you are taking photos of your little ones. It really works. And guess what? It makes shooting lots of fun!
